The adhesive process or bonding materials with adhesives comprises the following stages or phases:
Adhesive joint design - Engineering
Validation of the adhesive bonding
Generating the documents for the manufacture.
Verification in the manufacture and its use in life (maintenance) of the adhesive bonding.
Adhesive joint design
Throughout the design of the adhesive bonding it should be taken into account all the parameters that affect the functionality, manufacture and maintenance of the union from a standpoint of both technically and economically. The list of requirements is the document that contains all the parameters taken into account and directly affects the design of the adhesive bonding.
Once has define the type of bonding and the selected adhesive or glue, it is necessary do calculations to ensure the functionality, while it is important to take in mind several design rules for adhesive joints to improve and ensure the use in life of the bond.
Validation of the adhesive bonding
Once it has been defined the type of union, optimized and calculated the adhesive bonding, the next step is to validate that union. It is common to use aging tests using specimens subjected to different conditions. The successful outcome of these tests allow us to validate the adhesive and its adhesion to the substrates considered in the simulated conditions.
Documentation for manufacturing.
Prior to the manufacture or construction of bonded joints, it is necessary to generate a series of documents which explain in detail each of the requirements, materials, tools and steps to follow to ensure the correct real application of the adhesive on the substrate.
Verification in the manufacture and lifeuse.
Use of documents or tools that record the most important parameters that may affect the quality of the union, the realization of specimens during the production process for subsequent destructive testing and the use of non-destructive methods or techniques, will verify and ensure the quality of adhesive bonding during the manufacturing process and its subsequent maintenance.
Currently and since structural applications have being made today with adhesives because of the several advantages that this materials present, it is very important to perform each of these phases with suitably qualified staff that knows and has experience in adhesive processes.
As it happens with the welding process and in order to ensure staff qualifications and indirectly the ability to perform the production by the company in adhesive bonds, Europe provides a range of training courses that ensure full understanding of the process within these training courses is 3 distinct figures:
European Adhesive Engineer (EAE)
European Adhesive Specialist (EAS)
European Adhesive Bonder (EAB)
The figure of European Adhesive Engineer (EAE) is the person responsible for the entire process of the adhesive bonding, since the design phase to the maintenance of the bond, that person has a comprehensive knowledge of theoretical and validated practical in adhesive process. To obtain the title of European Adhesive Engineer, the candidate must perform 332 hours training course and overcome the various written and oral exams.
The intermediate level is the European Adhesive Specialist, whose figure is to oversee the manufacturing process and support the work of European Adhesive Engineer.
To obtain a diploma certifying as Specialist in adhesives is necessary to do a 120 hour training course and overcome the various written and oral exams.
The figure of European Adhesive Bonder is the person, who is responsible to properly apply the adhesive on the substrate, and using the necessary documentation for the manufacture, that person has the knowledge to validate and to ensure the quality of the union during its manufacture.
To obtain a diploma certifying as European adhesive Bonder is required a 40-hour training course and overcome the written and oral exam.
