The best adhesive is not the strongest or the most sticky, it is the best that behaved.
When using glue or adhesives materiales for structural bonding or involve some level of security, is necessary and essential to perform the analysis and design of adhesive bonding, to ensure the life of the adhesive bonding and the proper operation of the joint.
The design of adhesive bonding is the first step to perform before the industrialization of the joint, this phase includes a series of steps identified in the following milestones:
Define the list of requirements, identifying, gathering and writing in one document all the technical and economic requeriments that the adhesive bonding must fulfill, as loads and effort requirements, weather and chemicals that must resist the adhesive boding, and all the manufacturing and subsequent maintenance requirements.
Select the bonding technique to make it comply with the list of requirements, techniques such as adhesive coating, welding, riveting, screwing ... Selection and validation of the adhesive and the substrates that fulfill the list of requirements.
Analysis and design of the adhesive bond.
If you choose an adhesive bonding for your joint, during the design phase of the union you must keep in your mind the following rules:
The joint design must be simple, clear and safe.
The design must be simple, the union must contain the minimum number of components to be used, it must be easy to manufacture, maintenance and possible repair.
The design must be clear to avoid mistakes by incorrect interpretations due to lack of information.
Sure, the union has to be designed and sized to ensure at all time the life and functionality of the product, if it´s necessary you should introduce safety features and instructions for use.
Calculate and size the bonding area (width and thickness of the adhesive bead) in accordance with the technical requirements, using various computational techniques such as finite element, linear calculation, etc ...
During the dimensioning of the bonding area, you must affect the calculations for safety and aging factors.
Avoid at all times that the adhesive supports peel stresses, design the joint to withstand tensile or compressive stresses.
Protect tha adhesive bond from aggressive media that can accelerate aging and reduce the mechanical properties of the adhesive.
Consider the deformation behavior of the adhesive and substrate within the temperature range in which the joint will expose.
Take account the creep effect due it static and dynamic stress fatigue.
Perform a design by optimum solutions for the transmission of loads without affecting the substrate avoiding any stress concentrations.
Finally tell you when designing an adhesive bond, the designer must have in your mind that the best adhesive is not the strongest or the most sticky, it is the best behaved.
